SPED 751 Observation Assignments
(Minimum of 20 clock hours)


 

You are to observe in a classroom and complete as many of the following tasks as possible.  Submit a well written and detailed report.  If you are requested to assist in the classroom, then you'll complete fewer of these assignments.  However, please include in your report a description of what duties you performed while participating in the classroom and what you learned from the experience.  Most of you will submit a report of both observation assignments AND participation activities.

1. Determine if the teacher uses any curricula/program that deal with the affective (feelings) or interactive (interacting with others in a more positive manner) domain of student development.  If so, which ones?  Are  lessons conducted in the areas of anger management, social skills, self esteem, conflict resolution, character education, or other area?  If so, how often?  How is student progress assessed?

2. Based on your knowledge from previous college classes and your own experience, what suggestions would you offer this teacher that might help him or her to work better with certain students?  What could be improved in the way of the presentation, behavior management system, interactive style, etc.?   List several specific behavioral goals for him/her (See the www.behavioradvisor.com links titled "A checklist", "Catch em being good", Managing behavior with your instructional style", "Managing the behavior of groups", "Promoting positive peer pressure", "Creating your own behavior management system", and "Weaning kids from rewards" .

3. What else does the teacher use to manage or improve student behavior other than “the curriculum of control”? (Use of penalties to obtain compliance)

4. In discussion with the teacher, determine if s/he (and paraprofessionals/aides) remember the IEP behavioral goals and objectives for certain students.  Does the teacher address those goals/objectives?  Does the teacher make use of the strategies that are recommended in the BIP (behavior intervention plan) section of the IEP?

5. Select a youngster and describe him/her briefly.  What methods, curricula, and approaches would you use if s/he was in your classroom?
