GUIDELINES FOR HOMEWORK SUBMISSIONS

HOMEWORK  FORMAT
1. Double-space the entire paper.  Never use single or triple spacing in your paper, even for quotes,
        subheadings, etc.
2. Indent each paragraph four to seven spaces.
3. Two spaces follow a period.  One space follows a comma.

THE TEXT OF YOUR PAPER
1. The paper should be written in Standard American English.  If  SAE is not your first language, have someone proofread your  rough draft.  Avoid vernacular, slang, and informal language.  Use "proper" and precise English.
2. Be very precise in your spelling and grammar. Avoid:
-mixing singular/plural (e.g., Tell the student that they...) in the same sentence or paragraph.
-ending a phrase or sentence with a preposition (e.g., with,  to, for, if, of, from, etc.)
3. Avoid one sentence paragraphs.  Include at least two  sentences in a paragraph.
4. Place page numbers in the upper right corner of each page.  Do not place a number on your
cover page even though it is "page 1".  The first page of your "writeup" is "2".
5. Use "one", not "you" (e.g., "I suggest that you use restraint when..." becomes  "The authors
suggest that one use  restraint when...").
6. Do not use the word "child" (unless referring exclusively to  youngsters under eight years of age).
Use "student", "pupil", "youngster", or "learner".  Use non-sexist wording (e.g., "he or she",
"him or her", "his or her").  This awkward and  "politically correct" manner of wording can
be avoided by talking about more than one youngster (e.g., "their", "them").
7. If you mention a book, underline the title.  Remember that only the first word of the title
is  capitalized (and the first word after a colon in the title).
8. DO NOT place your paper in any sort of cover.  Simply staple it in the upper left hand corner.
9. DO NOT include any blank pages of paper in your project.

**Remember: Your paper should reflect both effort and precision.
An "A" reflects superior graduate work.
A "B" reflects strong graduate work.
A "C" reflects (barely) adequate graduate work.
