Tom McIntyre has written
a wonderful book that should prove enormously helpful for children with
emotional or behavioral disorders. The
Behavior Survival Guide for Kids is
written so that an elementary child can easily understand it; but it contains
some of the latest applications of clinically proven ways for children
to learn to manage their own behavior and make the right choices in school
and life. Children who use this book will not only make their own
lives better but also ease the lives of their parents, classmates, and
teachers. As with all great ideas, one wonders why no one ever thought
of this before?!

The Behavior
Survival Guide for Kids is an excellent
resource for children and youth with emotional or behavioral disorders
(EBD), their parents, their teachers, and others who work with them. The
text offers a positive, encouraging, and supportive approach to solving
problems associated with having EBD--research-based strategies for dealing
with feelings, difficult people, parents, teachers, and peers. It
explains the nature and possible causes of EBD in language that is easy
to read and understand (Chapter 1). Several chapters focus on practical
solutions to problems (“Smart Choices”). The content is empowering, stressing
that the young person himself or herself can make the choices that will
lead to positive changes in relationships with others.
Its a great book--very practical and helpful. It should be in the personal library of everyone who works with these youngsters.
