(Papers submitted in another format will be penalized or returned for re-write)
2. To see examples of how to use APA WRITING STYLE to cite materials used in a paper, go to:
http://library.albany.edu/usered/style/apastyle.html
3.If you need practice with ANY aspect of WRITTEN ENGLISH, you can find a massive web site with lots of practice activities at http://Owl.English.Purdue.edu/
4. The APA Style of Writing (required in our special education program...start mastering now)
1. Even if the information is presented in a different form elsewhere, you must "translate" it into APA form. Follow the examples provided below. Remember:
-only provide the initials for the author's given (first) names.
-underline titles of books/journals, and volume numbers (the volume number usually is the number of years
that the journal has been in publication).
-place issue numbers in parentheses (the issue number indicates how many issues have been published so far in this year)
-DO NOT put "p." or "pages" in front of page numbers. Just write in the first and last page numbers separated by a dash.
2. If referring to the work of an author, cite him/her. For example, "Smith (1995) reported that..." or "This can lead to unforseen consequences (Smith, 1995)." Note that in the second example, the punctuation follows the citation. If you are writing a paper that refers only to one book, you only need to reference the authors once in your paper. After this first time, we know of whom you are writing.
3. When including an exact quote of an author, follow that quotation with citation and page number(s). For example: According to Smith (1995), "We must always treat students with concern, caring and respect." (p. 89)" /or/ "It is of great importance to attempt positive interventions before using punitive techniques." (Smith, 1995, p. 100)
4. If you are going to elaborate on a statement by placing something in parentheses, use "e.g.," or "i.e.," For example, "There is much that a teacher can do when confronted by a defiant student (e.g., give a direction, reflect his/her statement, implement a consequence, etc.)."
"e.g.," means (in loose translation) "for example". "i.e.," means "in elaboration" or "in explanation". "i.e.," is used when you elaborate upon a statement.

OTHER THINGS TO REMEMBER
1. Make your opinions stand out from those of the author's. Use such prefaces as: "The author believes...", "Smith asserts that...", "In my opinion...", "From my experience, I have found...", etc.
2. Your paper show have a nice "flow" to it. It should not appear "disjointed" or "pasted together". Each sentence should relate to the previous and following ones. Your thoughts should be worded so that they reflect back to the book author's thoughts ("This reminded me of...", "I must disagree with the author on this particular point.", etc.)
5. Be aware the your professors have access to "Turn-it-in.com", a site that identifies the parts of papers that are "non-original". Do NOT use the exact words of someone else (or reference them if you do so). Paraphrase the writings of others. Do not plagerize. It could jeopardize your studies here, and consequently, your career.
